Protecting the Free World on a Video Game Console |

Since a little kid, I have dreamed of being a commando. I think this is a universal dream of rambunctious little boys. I had plastic army men set up all over the bedroom, toy tanks and metal jets I held in hand and ran around the house. As I got older, the video game console really started to evolve and the first sets of adventure shooters began coming out. Back then I was blown away by those shooters. Now video game console shooters border on what a full blown airstrike could look like. There is still a hint of fantasy even in the realest of war games, which is a good thing.
My DVD home theater has transformed my bedroom into a 21st century warzone one minute and then with a different game I am storming the beaches of Normandy as Germans lay down blankets of machine gun fire. On the video game console, these experiences are fun and replayable. Not to be confused with the horrors of real war, there is something about getting to be part of action in digital form that is hard to resist. And I don’t, it is only a matter of time before I try to save the free world again against terrorists online.
